Meta Is All-In On The Metaverse With World’s Fastest Supercomputer

Facebook, which recently rebranded to Meta to represent its future Metaverse aspirations, has just invested in an AI supercomputer that will be the fastest in the world upon its completion. The $958 B company and its services have become such an integral part of daily life, but its executives seek to push the envelope even further on its development.

The supercomputer in question is the AI Research SuperCluster (AI RSC) is currently within the top 5 in the world and is set to be completed in the middle of 2022. This makes perfect sense as it currently comes packing with 760 Nvidia DGX A100 Compute units with 8 NVIDIA A100 GPUs per unit. By the time of completion though, it will have a total of 16,000 GPUs onboard. To put it simply, this thing is an unrivaled beast.

How does it stack up against today’s supercomputers? Well, AI supercomputers work a little bit differently from what we have today. While today’s goliaths do one, two, or a small set of tasks extraordinarily well, the AI supercomputer is more flexible and can cater to different processes.

Nonetheless, its primary task is to train systems across Meta’s range of services. One could say that it’s an AI that constantly evolves with the help of machine learning, then implements its evolutions to the more traditional side of Meta. After it has achieved a certain threshold of learning billions of patterns, the AI can manage the ecosystem with minimal human assistance. Safety can also be assured as this device isn’t connected directly to the internet – all communications with the supercomputer pass through Meta’s systems first.

As expected, most people are interested to see if this supercomputer said to be exponentially faster than the current systems of Meta will play a part in forming the Metaverse. If you’re not familiar, the Metaverse is a working concept that will revolutionize the way people interact online with the help of virtual/augmented reality and connected spaces.

This supercomputer could dramatically speed up the process in which Meta builds the Metaverse and also add useful features within the Metaverse that we could have never imagined before. This includes real-time translation in language among a huge group of people, and a virtual space so immersive that you forget you’re in digital form.
